Messaging Marvel

You carry a cell phone with you everywhere you go. But what about a messaging device? For the most part they’re either too big, useless as phones, or both. With Nokia’s 6800, you don’t ever have to worry about bulging pockets or missing important e-mails.

Flip up the standard-looking keypad on this sleek 4.3-ounce cell phone and suddenly you have a full backlit keyboard for pecking out quick e-mail or SMS messages to colleagues and friends. The 4,096-color display is smart enough to change its orientation when you switch operation modes.

Not only does the 6800 support POP3 and IMAP4 e-mail, the device comes preloaded with ISP profiles for Yahoo!, SBC, and BellSouth.net to make configuration a snap. Other ISPs such as Earthlink are compatible, and BlackBerry software support is promised for later this year.

The 6800 is also an able organizer. Along with a phone book application that stores up to 500 contacts, there’s a calendar to keep on top of your appointments, a to-do list that offers different priority levels, and a notepad application that supports up to 3,000 characters. Users can download the Nokia PC Suite for free and synchronize important info via infrared or cable with their notebooks.

For surfing the wireless Web, the 6800 takes advantage of high-speed GPRS networks and the device’s own XHTML browser. WAP support allows users to download new applications over the air.

Want to tune into your favorite station? Just plug in the optional headset and you can listen to FM radio on the go. Other multimedia amenities include polyphonic ring tones, two games, and your choice of eight different background color schemes.

The Nokia 6800, which comes with a loud speakerphone, offers up to 4.5 hours of talk time and up to 10 days of standby time. It’s available from Cingular Wireless for $249 with a two-year service agreement.
